Saskatchewan Wedding

Nick's cousin, Kaitlyn got married on June 19th, so we made the road trip over there to support them and celebrate with all of Nick's extended family. I was finally able to meet some of Nick's favorite cousins, and get to know some of his other relatives better. It was a beautiful day and everything went well. We got our first family picture of the three of us, and I love it. Everyone thought Nixon was adorable in his cute outfit and mini tie (even though it was still huge on him).

One night at the motel I looked down at Nixon while feeding him his bottle, and this is what I saw. Interesting...

I bought this cute outfit a couple years ago, and I love it so much because it's Africa! Nixon wore this the day after the wedding to a family brunch / birthday breakfast for Teressa

Nixon's Arrival

Wow. I have been a MAJOR blogging slacker. But......in my defense, I just had a baby so it's okay right? Anyways, since I've been on vacation the past couple of weeks I've had a bit of down time and I figured I better bite the bullet and update or I'll be so far behind that I won't ever do it! So this post is dedicated to telling the story of Nixon's arrival as well as how he's been doing the past couple of months. Yep, that's right - yesterday he turned 2 months old! Crazy how fast time flies.

I wanted to post a few more pictures from the hospital, but since I'm down at my Mom's and don't have access to those pics right now I'm just including a few that I already posted on facebook awhile ago. My sister took them for us at our house when Nixon was 3 days old.

Okay. So here's the story. When you have a planned C-section all of the fun/stressful elements of surprise are taken away so we were pretty laid-back when thinking about going to the hospital. I admit that I was a little disappointed I wouldn't get to have the whole crazy experience of labor, and I wouldn't get to see what kind of reaction Nick would have had in that situation. I'm sure he would have been one of those husbands that has sympathy pains or faints at the sight of blood. But on the other hand it was really nice to know beforehand when and how everything was going to happen. After all, I like to be a planner ;) Nick and I really only started to get nervous in the last 24 hours.

We got up around 5am on May 11, got ready and drove to the hospital. My surgery was scheduled for 8am so when we got there they assigned me to a room (the last available private one - YAY!) and we had to wait there for an hour or so. They told us a nurse was going to come by to start my IV and then we just had to sit there (which was quite painful since we were getting really excited to just meet him already!). Anyways, as soon as we got there Nick decided to look around and check out what would be our home for the next three days. In our bathroom he discovered a "bidet" and thought it was pretty cool since he'd never seen one in person before. So he decided to turn it on and see how it worked. B.A.D. idea. It was like a freaking Old Faithful geyser explosion and water sprayed straight up at fire hydrant pressure hitting the ceiling and spraying all over the bathroom, getting water on the walls, mirror and on mine and Nick's clothes. It was seriously so funny, we were laughing so hard. Before he could even clean it up a Nurse walked in and asked what happened. Nick told her and she just laughed, saying that he wasn't the first guy to do that. hahaha

They came to take us upstairs around 7:45am where Nick changed into scrubs and we put on our attractive hairnet things and waited for the Anesthesiologist and my Doctor to get there. They told Nick that once I went in to get started on my spinal he would have about a half hour to wait before the surgery got started. But it actually went WAY faster than that and was more like 5 minutes later when they called him into the operating room to come and sit beside me. I looked at the clock and it was 8:13am when they started. When Nick came in, my Doctor had already made the incision and they were operating away so Nick got a full on view of my insides before he even sat down! Gross (and I better mention that Nick may or may not have a weak stomach at the sight of blood....).

The spinal anesthetic felt so weird. It was probably the only thing that I worried about going in, because all I'd ever heard was that the needle was SO big and hurt really bad going into your back. Surprisingly it hardly hurt at all, but it was crazy how fast I went numb and how much of my body was frozen. Pretty much from my armpits down, and even my arms and hands were a bit tingly. But I was glad that I could still feel Nick rubbing my hand as he talked to me. After only a minute or two of us talking, Nick started to look a little queasy. (In his defense - it smelled like laser burned tissue in there and he could actually see the whole surgery out of his peripheral vision since the little barrier sheet they had up was so low. And like I said, he's not so good when it comes to blood). I asked Nick if he was okay and he said yes but was looking a little pale. I think the anesthesiologist heard us talking, because he asked Nick if he was okay and and Nick said, "No" and looked like he was going to pass out. So the anesthesiologist told him to get off the stool and sit on the floor. A nurse came over and made him lay down and put a cold wash cloth on his forehead. I remember laying on the table looking down and telling him to take deep breaths and to just stay there. A little ironic don't you think? I was laying on an operating table with 90% of my body frozen, telling him HE was going to be okay.

The nurse made Nick go out into the hall to clear his head, and he waited out there until he heard the baby and they let him come in to watch Nixon getting cleaned up and to take some pictures. I literally felt nothing. They'd told me that I would feel some heavy pressure as they pushed on my abdomen to move the baby lower and pull him out of the incision, but I didn't even feel that. I was just laying there wondering if Nick was okay and when he'd be coming back into the room when I heard a baby crying! I remember thinking, "That's it? So fast? I didn't feel anything! Am I really ready for this?"

Nick was able to be the one to bring Nixon over to meet me, and we both got a little teary eyed. It's so amazing to see your child for the first time and just appreciate what a miracle bringing a child into this world truly is. Like I mentioned in my last quick post, we named our son Nixon Shane Famulak and he weighed 7 lbs 15 oz and was 19.5 inches long. He was born at 8:41am (see I told you it was fast!).

We were in the hospital for 2 1/2 days, then home to recuperate. We are so lucky to have such great family and friends that love and support us, and we are so grateful to all the help they gave us in those first few days, and even now. Thanks again everyone! My recovery has been going really well and (aside from some pregnancy pounds) I almost feel like I'm back to normal. Nixon was a bit jaundice for the first few weeks, and had a hard time having the energy to eat. He didn't get back to his birth weight until after he was 3 weeks old and even after he'd gained a bunch of weight he started to lose some and we along with our doctor were concerned. He just wasn't getting enough food, so we ended up having to go to bottle feeding with formula, and he has been doing great ever since. He's really starting to chub up, and I'm hoping to get down to weigh him tomorrow to see exactly how much he weighs now. He is honestly such a great baby and only cries if he has a dirty diaper or is really hungry. He only wakes up 1-2 times a night, and will usually give me a 5 hour stretch before he wakes up for the first feeding. Pure bliss. Though on average I am definitely getting a lot less sleep now than I used to. But who would have thought you can function on so much less sleep?

It's been a busy and tiring time adjusting to life as parents, but we are loving it and wouldn't have it any other way. We love Nixon and are excited to just be able to watch him grow and discover everything around him. Hope you enjoy the pics, and (if you actually made it to the end of this massive post) hope you enjoy the plethora of posts to come!

And then there were three....

Well, the day has finally come. At 8:41am we welcomed our son, Nixon Shane Famulak into the world! He had quite the set of lungs on him when he came out, but has been really content and happy to sleep for the rest of the day. Even though he was delivered over two weeks early he weighed in at 7lbs 15oz and is 19.5 inches long. We couldn't be more thrilled and of course we think he is the handsomest little guy around. We had quite a few visitors so we are pretty tired. I will give another update when I get home. So for now just know that he is happy and healthy and we love him to bits.

Our baby's nursery!

Whoo hoo - It's finally done :) Hope you like it as much as I do! I LOVE clean lines, a simple modern look and punches of bright color. I can't wait to bring my little baby home - only 5 more days!

I do have a cute lime green change pad cover, it just hasn't arrived yet :(

I love this shelf for many reasons: The little leather shoes are some that Nick actually wore when he was little - so precious! The abc's frame Ashley made for me, and I put two little wooden animal puzzles on it that I brought home from Botswana. I can't wait to fill the frames with pictures of my little boy, and the empty space to the left of the shoes is for a wooden initial letter that'll be scrapbooked with cute green/blue paper!

I randomly bought this metal tree from a Home Hardware in a teeny tiny town in Saskatchewan last summer - and even though I wasn't even pregnant,
I knew even then that I wanted it for our nursery.
It reminds me of a Geneology Family Tree.

I have a lime green sheet and matching bed skirt that are also still on their way. Sheesh! Hurry up already!

I absolutely love the rag quilt I had made for the crib.
I want one for each of my kids.

I think I'm going to have to hem these curtains to just below the window. How else am I going to close them without knocking everything off the book shelf?

There are so many things I love about this book shelf. It made it SO easy to add punches of color to the room. I love the cloth boxes - very cute, but still functional. I'm not really going with turtles as a theme, but I have a few on top of the shelf that I brought back from Madagascar, and I just loved the green turtle piggy bank so I had to get it too! The bottom right corner is the baby book (which I love) and I can't wait to add more children's books to our little collection!

My cute, comfy rocking chair with matching rag pillow :)

Hope you enjoyed my labor of love!

Some deep thoughts...

Just to warn you, this post is probably going to be long winded because I'm a little emotional these days. The past few days I have been feeling very blessed, and today something really just touched my heart that I wanted to share.

In the past month a few things have come up for Nick and I that just make me feel like, "Are you serious!?! Can't we catch a break?!?" While driving home from work last month my car just up and stalled out in the middle of busy rush hour traffic. We got it home, and after talking to a few people realized that it was probably going to end up costing $1000-2000 to fix. Oh great. The next week, our jeep wouldn't start when Nick and I were trying to come home from our YW/Scouting activity. It needed to have a new starter put in ($200). And then to put the icing on the cake, our dryer died this past Saturday. Like totally died. It cannot be fixed. So out we went to purchase a new washer and dryer (because lets face it - our washer is REALLY old as well and most laundry prices are best when you buy a set). For those of you that don't remember, we are due to have our first child in less than a week, and it has not been an inexpensive process to get ready for his arrival. Baby stuff is expensive! Let alone the fact that this is the first month for us that we have gone from a two income family to just one. Big changes and some big challenges for us.

I'm sure most of you have already heard of Stephanie Nielsen (or NieNie as she blogs) and I had
heard of her as well, but never taken the time to read about or watch her story. Until today. (Thanks for sharing the link, Christal.) I honestly just bawled as I watched the video clip. (I don't know how to attach a video clip, so just copy and paste the address into your browser.)

She is such a good example of how to live a life with meaning, embracing the trials as blessings, and how we need to always turn to our Savior. She inspires me to be a better person. To be more conscious of the blessings I do indeed have and to remember that life is not about the worldly or material things, but about how we grow personally along our journey. This life is about how we prepare ourselves to meet God. About what we do to share and strengthen our testimonies of the truth. It's about how we treat others and how we need to remember that EVERYONE is a Child of God. It's about recognizing the blessings we have and being grateful for them.

We searched and shopped all Saturday afternoon for a washer and dryer. After realizing it was going to cost around $2000 for a set we liked, we were discouraged about having to make such an expensive purchase unexpectedly. This is NOT a good time for us! But we are having a baby in a week and need a washer and dryer, so we bit the bullet and placed an order and paid. Our tender mercy came on Monday morning when my dad called me and said that they've been thinking about getting a new washer and dryer for awhile and this would give them a good excuse to do so. They offered us the set that they currently have. For free. And they would be able to bring it up to us next week. We were able to cancel our order and get a full refund of our money.

Then yesterday Nick got a call from the mechanic who said, "You guys got lucky..." He was able to figure out what was wrong with the car and fix it for less than $400. Which also allowed us to be able to pay him to fix something else on the car that's been needing to be done for awhile. All for less than we'd anticipated on the repair that caused the car to breakdown!
Having these two things happen honestly took such a big weight off of our shoulders to know that we wouldn't have to stretch ourselves so tight financially right now.

I would feel ungrateful if I didn't also mention the other big trial and blessing that we've had this past year. As I'm just a few days away from having the baby, I've been thinking a lot about the road we've taken to get to where we are today. It was really hard for me to struggle with not being able to get pregnant, finding something wrong, and having to have surgery to fix it. Hopefully that was the only factor that went in to our struggles. Regardless, I know that we have truly been blessed to have been able to get pregnant at all. I am so excited for this big change, so happy to be able to experience it for myself, and so grateful to have a Father in Heaven who has answered my prayers. I know that His love is real, and that he cares about what I am going through. I know that if we trust in Him he will provide a way for us to accomplish anything. He has for me.
